Match Report
Avoncroft Sunday XI suffered defeat in their opening fixture of the season away at Droitwich, but were able to walk away with their heads held high after being left to play the match with only nine men.
Batting first Avoncroft got off to a decent start thanks to a fluent 30 from Dan Elliott, who fell to a dubious LBW decision, and then found themselves in trouble at 53 for 4. Croft recovered thanks to a 79 run partnership between skipper Christopher Pitt, who finished the innings stranded on 47 not out and Josh Cound (42). Croft were eventually bowled out for 155.
In reply Croft bowled valiantly and with thanks to the Droitwich captain who gave us one of his players to field for us were able to make a competitive game out of it. Joe Broomfield took two wickets with the new ball, one with the first ball of his spell. Christopher Pitt took three wickets in four overs and with wickets for Dan Elliot and Ed Pugh Croft were in the game. However two dropped catches cost Croft and Droitwich were able to knock off the runs seven wickets down.
Croft were able to leave the field feeling proud of their efforts with bat and ball against a talented and youthful Droitwich side. To arrive at the game with nine men and be competitive is a sign of the great spirit within the Sunday side and I would like to thank those who took part.
