Avoncroft 2nd XI improved on their fortunes with a losing draw away at Alvechurch. As usual, losing the toss and were put in to field which proved good fortune initially as Alvechurch were quickly reduced to 17-3 after 3 overs with 2 wickets for Martyn Cound and 1 for Andy Pittam. After this blistering start Alvechurch batsman set about a rebuilding process, with some quick running and help by the Avoncroft fielders.
Just before drinks Josh Cound got the breakthrough Croft deserved given their effort in the field and it was a smart catch by Neville Edmonds and soon after Jon Bird began his spell and quickly found his groove taking a wicket with Andy Pittam rolling back the years at Gully to take a wonderful catch. As the innings drew to a close some tight bowling by Jon Bird and Martyn Cound restricted Alvechurch to 214-9 with both bowlers taking 3 and 4 wickets respectively.
Avoncroft’s innings began well with Jon Brunt scoring at an aggressive rate and being able supported by Derek Croal. Derek was dismissed and Jonty Heslop soon followed. Jon Bird then came into bat with himself settling and Jon Brunt maintaining his impressive scoring rate Croft appeared in control and after this length partnership Croft required 50 from the last 8 overs. Unfortunately we were unable to accumulate the remaining runs as a steady procession of batsman came and went which included Jon brunt for 113 in only his second game back and Jon Bird with 38.This left Martyn Cound and Neville Edmonds steadying the ship for the last 4 overs with Croft finishing on 194-6 off their 45 overs.
Onwards to next week where we are hosting Astwood Bank.
