Avoncroft U11s Pairs side put in a promising batting display against a strong Droitwich side
In their first pairs game of the season, Croft’s batsmen put on a good show in the face of probing bowling from Droitwich. In a format where lost wickets result in five runs being deducted from your score, keeping out the good balls can be just as important as scoring off the bad ones. The boys can therefore take pride in losing just 3 wickets in their 16 overs, despite being put under pressure by some tight bowling. Ben Taylor top scored with 7, putting on 16 runs in a partnership with Sam Taylor, but there was good batting across the board. Particular mention should go to the opening pair of Oscar Jinks and Oisin Morgan who saw off Droitwich’s strong opening bowlers in an unbeaten partnership of 10. In total, Croft scored 52 runs in their 16 over and lost 3 wickets for a net score of 237 (teams start on 200).
Bowling proved to be a tougher proposition against a set of Droitwich batsmen that were a bit more experienced in their cricketing development. Bad balls were put away with flair, which in turn put pressure on the bowlers to bowl in the right areas. In general, the boys stood up well to the challenge. Ben Athey, Oscar Jinks and Tom Blizzard all hit the stumps to match the 3 wickets taken by Droitwich and, although he didn’t pick up a wicket, Oisin Morgan was the pick of the bowlers going for just 5 runs in his 2 overs. Droitwich ended with a net score of 306, winning by 69 runs.
