Avoncroft Sunday XI travelled to Astwood Bank for the latest round of their league campaign in positive mood following last Sunday’s victory. Astwood Bank won the toss and batted first, Crofts opening bowlers kept things tight early on and made the breakthrough thanks to Liam Kehoe and with Josh Cound finding a good line and shape outside off stump things looked promising. However Astwood Banks opening bat countered with some heavy hitting and Crofts bowlers struggled to keep him quiet with at least one boundary ball being bowled in every over.
Our bowlers continued to fight however and on a quick scoring wicket Astwood Bank never got away from us. The turning point in the match came as with Astwood Banks opener set on 47 he pulled to deep square and was dropped despite a valiant effort on the boundary. He would go on to make 111. Astwood Bank finished their innings on 218 for 4 from 40 overs with Mark Wood (2) and Mark Whitehead taking the rest of the wickets. At tea Croft could be satisfied with their efforts and were confident that 219 could be chased down.
Croft’s openers started positively and again Jonty Heslop and Dan Elliott showed promise together with an opening stand of 46. Once Jonty was out however two further wickets fell to consecutive deliveries and Croft found themselves in trouble again. Dan Elliott and Christopher Pitt rebuilt the innings with a 51 run partnership and at drinks, with batting to come, Croft were in reach at 96 for 3.
The innings faltered however when skipper Christopher Pitt failed to dispatch a loose delivery and was caught and bowled. Josh Cound showed promise with some attacking shots however once he was dismissed Croft collapsed and despite Dan Elliott making a fine 69 Croft were all out for 158. A disappointing batting display with only four players reaching double figures.
Croft have a weekend off from league duties this weekend and can look forward to an interclub T20 tournament at Avoncroft. A chance for the team to relax and enjoy themselves. Avoncroft encourage all to attend the day and show support for the club on what is forecast to be a fine weekend of weather.
