Avoncroft are through to the final of the T20 Carter Cup after an exciting victory over Kempsey.
Avoncroft won the toss on a glorious summers evening and elected to bowl first against a Kempsey team who were in form with both the bat and ball. Croft created pressure on the opening batsmen with tight lines from Paul Athey, Dan Elliot and Craig Hughes early on. The attack was mixed around throughout the innings which helped Croft maintain the control. All the bowlers chipped in with good performances, Athey taking 3 -23 in his 4 overs, Elliot the same, Hughes 2-28 and James Downing 1-24. A tight performance all round with very little given away in bad balls helped to constrain Kempsey to 104-9 in their 15 overs.
Croft were sensing the opportunity for creating an upset, having contained Kempsey well, a strong performance was required with the bat. Sam Hughes departed early on bringing Elliot to the crease with Alex Brunt. Brunt played the type of innings he has become renowned for, bludgeoning four 6’s in one over off the bowling of Farooq, to leave Kempsey in disarray. After 4 overs Croft were 44-1 but the game was far from done. Kempsey fought back hard with a flurry of wickets falling to O’Neill. Fortunately, Avoncroft at 83-7 after the 9th over, had the composure and experience of Athey and John Brunt to call upon. The pair slowly and calmly chipped away at the remainder of the target to bring Croft to victory in the 12th over.
After a nerve-jangling finale to this game Croft now face Netherton in the final to be played at Kidderminster CC on Monday the 3rd of July (6pm start). Croft will be looking to take revenge on a team that they lost to in the same final only two years ago.
