Croft fall to defeat by 6 wickets
Avoncroft’s Under 12s continued their improvement last week as they produced their best batting performance of the season at home to Pedmore. Revelling in his new role as opening batsman, Henry Jinks led the way with a good combination of controlled aggression and positive running between the wickets. Jinks looked on course to achieve Croft’s first retirement score of the season (at U12s, batsmen retire when they reach 30), but fell agonisingly short when he was run out for 28. Despite this, the platform had been set for Croft to push on to a competitive total. Matthew Athey (14no) and Sam Taylor (8) both helped to keep up the momentum as Croft reached 112-5 from their 20 overs.
Given the strength of the Croft bowling options, the U12s started in the field feeling they could close out their first victory of the season at this age group. Unfortunately, Pedmore had other ideas and with Croft unable to match their usual high standards, Pedmore always stayed on top of the run chase. Sam Taylor picked up Croft’s first wicket thanks to a good catch by Oisin Morgan. Morgan continued his positive personal contribution by trapping Pedmore opener Evie Middleton leg before for 26 but no other wickets fell as Pedmore eased to their target with 2 overs remaining.
