Batsmen see Croft home for 35 run victory
Avoncroft’s Under 11s won their third successive game on Thursday, easing home against a Bewdley side missing a couple of key players. Croft started well with the ball with Matthew Athey hitting the top of off stump with the second ball of the game. Kyle Shaw also picked up an early wicket as Croft cruised through the first 6 overs with Bewdley struggling to get a foothold in the game. The wheels then came off for the next 8 overs – Croft’s usually reliable bowlers sprayed the ball around and previously tight fielding became ragged. Oisin Morgan and Fin Morris both took wickets but Parkes (11) and McCarthy (13) batted well to put the visitors on top. Ben Athey dragged the momentum back in Croft’s favour, taking 2 wickets with the first 2 balls of the final over, and this halted the final Bewdley push as they finished on 89-7 for a net score of 254.
Croft’s batting has improved immensely over the last few weeks which was clear for all to see as the boys built a mature run chase. Ben Taylor got the reply off to a fast start, interspersing some textbook shots with some from his own coaching manual – the trademark reverse sweep delivering one of four boundaries in his score of 18. Ben Huxley also stood out with some exquisitely timed shots in his 16, with Sam Taylor (7), Kyle Shaw (5) and Ben Athey (6) all contributing. Croft didn’t lose a wicket until the 13th over, when Parkes (2-19) got reward for his efforts. Matthew Athey (8) and Oscar Jinks (4) saw Croft home as they finished on 99-2 for a net score of 289.
