Positive start to the season for the new Under 11’s side
Playing their first ever game as an Under 11 side, with five players making their hardball debut for Avoncroft, expectations were tempered as Croft lined up to face Old Halesonians last Sunday (13th May).
Having lost the toss and been asked to bat first, Croft got off to a shaky start with a mix-up between the openers resulting in captain Rohan Levy being run out for 1. Any further nerves were soon calmed as Ben Huxley and Liam Livesey came together to begin a partnership that added 46 runs to the scoreboard. Huxley looked solid in the face of some probing bowling from Mathew Boroughs, waiting patiently for the bad ball and taking advantage of it when it came along. Livesey was the more aggressive of the pair but continued his rapid development by importantly acknowledging the balls that needed to be defended.
Huxley became the first Croft batsman this season to reach his retirement score of 30 and, with Livesey dismissed shortly after for 20, there was a danger that Croft to could lose the momentum that they had worked hard to create. Ben Athey ensured that this would not be the case, running well between the wickets and punishing any width outside the off-stump to match the exploits of Huxley and bring up his first score of 30 retired. Debutants Bobby Riley (11*) and Oliver White (3*) made sure that Avoncroft kept going all the way to the end of their 20 overs, enabling Croft to finish on 129-3.
The result of the game was never in doubt after Levy took a quite-stunning catch off the bowling of Athey (1-4) to dismiss the opposing captain Charlie Timmins in the first over of the reply. From that point on, Croft’s bowlers maintained a tight grip on proceedings, with newbies Aidan Sahota and Joshua Hart impressing with 3 wickets between them. Livesey (1-3) and Luke Hodgetts (1-16) were the other wicket takers as the visitors were restricted to 77-7 in their 20 overs leaving Croft as the victors by 52 runs.
