Excellent bowling display sets up latest league victory
Avoncroft Under 11’s made it three wins out of three with an 8-wicket victory over a young Wombourne side on Sunday. The Under 11’s are showing really depth and skill with their bowling and this was on full show in their latest win.
Bowling first, the game was only four balls old when a key moment ensued – the compact Archie Mullett driving cleanly to mid-off only to be beaten by the throw from Bobby Riley to be dismissed for 1. This opened an early door for Croft and they pushed it open with both hands. Ben Athey bowled the other opener, Ben Dainty, for a duck before Olly Shelton produced the ball of the day to remove the off-bail of Joe Conway-Lees for 5.
With the top 3 back in the pavilion, Wombourne struggled to get the ball away as the rest of the Croft bowlers keep up the pressure. Ben Huxley picked up a wicket with a loving out-swinger that took a thick edge and was taken by Rohan Levy at gully. Another run out followed before Joe Neeson produced the moment of the day, flying full stretch to his left to take an incredible caught-and-bowled chance. Olly White produced an inswinger from around the wicket to pick up the penultimate wicket before a mix up between the final two batsmen saw them both end up at the same end – Harry Shaw and Aidan Sahota maintaining their calm to complete the third run out of the innings. Wombourne were dismissed for 42 in the 14th over.
In reply, openers Harvey Shaw and Ben Huxley took a few balls to get used to the pace of the pitch before cutting loose in impressive fashion. Shaw retired on 31 not out off only 18 balls shortly before Huxley hit the winning runs, finishing on 10 not out off just 7 balls. Croft completed the win, finishing on 43-0 off 4.2 overs.
