Croft miss out in exciting finale against Ombersley
Avoncroft Under 13’s traveled to Ombersley for their second game of the season and, despite a fighting performance, they just missed out on their first victory, losing by 3 runs.
Bowling first, Croft were unable to make the early breakthrough as their hosts saw off the new ball. Leg-spinner Hamish Schulze picked up the first wicket, bowling Thorp for 10 and when Harry Stone chipped in with a wicket of his own in the next over, Croft were back in the game. Ombersley recovered with Ben Waddington and Jack Harris both reaching their retirement score of 30 before Croft clawed themselves back again – an excellent piece of fielding from Matt Athey resulting in a run out before Schulze (2-8 from 3 overs) returned to pick up another wicket. Ombersley finished on a par score of 101-4.
In reply, captain Henry Jinks and Hamish Schulze got Croft off to a good start, going along nicely before Jinks was caught for 11. Oscar Jinks joined Schulze at the crease and the pair put on 31 before both were dismissed for 17 each in quick succession. Some tight bowling started to deliver positive results for the hosts as they squeezed the Croft batting and slowly increased the pressure. With another couple of quick wickets falling, Matt Athey came to the crease with Croft needing 23 off the last 3 overs for victory. Despite the best efforts of all the Avoncroft boys, they came up just short finishing on 98-6 with Athey on 17*.
